We had an absolutely perfect day with our tour guide - Rogin Luo - who took us for a hike along The Great Wall! Didn't know what to expect and were thrilled to have him as our guide. Very imformative, knowledgable and fun! We go to experience a part of The Great Wall that was unrestored and see all its natural beauty. Got a long history lesson along the way!

After the hike, we all went to lunch at a small place at the bottom of the hill. Located in a house, we ate lunch in the proprietors bedroom! What a hoot! Rogin is the Best of the Best! This tour company delivered for us and we are extremely grateful.

Chinese Chess

Chinese chess (中国象棋), a sort of game good for intelligence, has a history of more than 3,000 years. It is a strategy board game for two players. In ancient China, chess was viewed as a kind of art of self-cultivation by scholar-officials. Nowadays, thousands of amateurs regard it as a game good at brain and wit. It is not only can enrich the life, but also can develop intelligence and inspire thought.

Chessboard and chess pieces embody the culture of China. In short, chess simulates the ancient battle, line battle, land battle and plain battle. Two players move chess pieces in turn with the purpose to capture enemy’s general. During the chess war, players can improve their thought ability through change of military tactics.

Chessboard is a quadratic plane, where nine parallel vertical lines crisscross ten parallel horizontal lines. There are 90 cross points, which is the place to lay chess pieces out. The blank zone between the 5th and 6th horizontal lines is called “boundary” (河界 in Chinese). The whole chessboard is divided into two equal parts by the boundary. There is a “米”-shaped square named “jiugong”.

Chess pieces amount to 32 in total, divided into red and black groups. Modern pieces are usually made from plastic, though some are still wooden, and some more expensive pieces are jade. Pieces are flat circular disks engraved with Chinese characters. The name and number are as follows:
Red: general (帅) 1, chariot (车)2, horse (马)2, cannon (炮)2, elephant (相)2, advisor (仕)2,     soldier (兵) 5
Black: general (帅)1, chariot (车)2, horse (马)2, cannon (炮)2, elephant (象)2, advisor (士), soldier (卒)5

General is signed with “帅” in Chinese character on red side and “将” on black side. As the leader of the chess pieces, it is the ultimate object for both two sides. It can only move inside “jiugong”.

There are five soldiers in each side, engraved with “仕” on red side and “士” on black side. They move and capture one point along the vertical line or horizontal line inside “Jiugong”.

Each side has two elephants, labeled “相” on red side and “象” on black side. It moves two points following diagonal line.

Chariot is the most powerful and it can move along both horizontal line and vertical line without any limit. It is engraved in “车” with traditional Chinese character on both sides.

Cannon is labeled with traditional Chinese character “炮” on both red and black sides. Cannon moves like chariot, but it can only jump a single pieces when capturing, no matter friends or foe.

Each side has two horses, which is labeled “马” for both sides. It moves straightly firstly, then goes diagonally away from its former position. Its selection range is up to 8 points.

Each players has five soldiers, which is engraved “兵” on red side and “卒子” on black side. Soldier has no choice but to move forward. Once it cross the boundary , it can move horizontally.
