We had an absolutely perfect day with our tour guide - Rogin Luo - who took us for a hike along The Great Wall! Didn't know what to expect and were thrilled to have him as our guide. Very imformative, knowledgable and fun! We go to experience a part of The Great Wall that was unrestored and see all its natural beauty. Got a long history lesson along the way!

After the hike, we all went to lunch at a small place at the bottom of the hill. Located in a house, we ate lunch in the proprietors bedroom! What a hoot! Rogin is the Best of the Best! This tour company delivered for us and we are extremely grateful.

Cheongsam Production Techniques

Cheongsam (旗袍), the traditional cloth of Chinese female in the Republic of China, is reviewed as the most gorgeous culture in Chinese fashion culture of long history. On 23rd, May, 2011, cheongsam production technique has been listed into the third state-level non-material cultural heritage protection. On the 22nd APEC held in Beijing in Nov., 2011, cheongsam was chosen as the cloth of leaders’ wives participating the meeting.

Someone said that the history of cheongsam could be traced back in the pre-Qin Dynasty. Cheongsam has an evolution of hundreds of years due to the development of lifestyle and aesthetic interest of people. Cheongsam got its golden time in 1930s and 1940s, featuring various styles, such as round, square and long jin (two pieces making up the front of the Cheongsam); low and ingot-shaped collar; long, short and trumpet-shaped sleeves; fishtail and billowing-shaped hem, etc..

Red is the representative color, displaying the long history and traditional culture of China and mainly showing the elegant and implicit charm of oriental women. The patterns of cheongsam generally derive from traditional Chinese ornamentation including bamboo, plum blossom and Chinese painting.

Historical development
Some scholars said that in order to pursue the ideological emancipation and the right, women in the beginning of the Republic of China wore robes following the men. Maybe that is one of the reason why cheongsam got popular. After Han Dynasty, women had no choice but to wear coat and dress. Robe was the patent of men.

In the early Republic of China, under the flooding of western culture and idea, youngsters especially young femininity bravely sought for the liberation. One of the phenomenon was the change of clothing. The female on the robe had been general mood at that time. After the Northern Expedition (1926-1927), cheongsam regained women’s temperament.

Since1930s, cheongsam was viewed as the standard cloth of Chinese women from folk women to wives of officers. It went so far as to formal dress of social interaction. Cheongsam achieved the golden time in 1930s and 1940s. Its style matched with the prevailing European women’s dress at that time. At the end of 1930s, “improved cheongsam” appeared, production technique and structure of which were more westernized. From then on, cheongsam fell into a pattern. Following ones just made some change in the way of length, ficial and decoration.
