We had an absolutely perfect day with our tour guide - Rogin Luo - who took us for a hike along The Great Wall! Didn't know what to expect and were thrilled to have him as our guide. Very imformative, knowledgable and fun! We go to experience a part of The Great Wall that was unrestored and see all its natural beauty. Got a long history lesson along the way!

After the hike, we all went to lunch at a small place at the bottom of the hill. Located in a house, we ate lunch in the proprietors bedroom! What a hoot! Rogin is the Best of the Best! This tour company delivered for us and we are extremely grateful.

Beijing Palace Lantern

Palace lantern (宫灯), just as its name implies, was a kind of lighting tool used in royal court in ancient time. Beijing palace lantern could be dated from Yongle period of Ming Dynasty, when the emperor of Yongle moved capital to Beijing, he called up skilled craftsmen from all over the country to make lanterns for royal court. The manufacturing process of palace lantern is complex, about hundreds of processes in total. At the end of Qing Dynasty, the manufacture skill of palace lantern spread among the folk.

Beijing palace lantern is a traditional Han handicraft of long standing reputation. On Lantern Festival, hundreds of thousands of households are decorated with lanterns of variety to celebrate the festival. Lanterns used on festival are made of red yarn. In ancient time, lantern used in palace were usually made of silk with classical Chinese painting on it.


















Categories of palace lantern
Six-side palace lantern
Six-side palace lantern is the majority of Beijing palace lantern. It is made of valuable wood such as rosewood, redwood as skeleton and inset glass or painted screen. The whole handicraft consists of two layers and each layer is composed of six symmetrical sides. The wider upper layer is engraved six heads of dragon or phoenix on top and hangs six colorful fringes.

Flower Lantern
Most of flower lanterns are made from precious wood as skeleton and adorned with glass, silk or yarn. The manufacture of flower lantern needs comprehensive skills: carving, guilloche, engrave and paint, none of which can be dispensed with. The shape is evolved from six-side lantern. Royal flower lanterns are the best of all.

Every lantern festival in ancient time, empress dowager permitted officers over three grades to view lanterns at the palace. As these privileged officers together with their dependents viewed lanterns, they tasted Tang Yuan (a kind of rice dumplings). When farewelling, emperor dowager granted one flower lantern to everyone, with a mean of sharing fun with citizens.


















Animal Lantern
Animal Lantern is shape with animals such as sheep, dragon, horse, rabbit, frog, and so on. These described animals are vivid and highly imaginative. Sheep lantern, as the traditional animal lantern in Beijing is the most distinctive. Bind bamboo split as sheep-shaped skeleton and stick with layers of white cotton paper as wool. There is movable joint between head and neck. Lighting the candle inside tummy, the head swing frequently, hence it is most popular by children.

Auspicious Lantern
Auspicious lantern is a sort of lantern with red polygonal. Its pattern is based on a kind of wild plant called “Jili Guo” in Chinese. A colorful crystal ball is inset between two corners. When lighting, the lantern radiate multicolored light. It looks like a lucky star, shining among the world.
