We had an absolutely perfect day with our tour guide - Rogin Luo - who took us for a hike along The Great Wall! Didn't know what to expect and were thrilled to have him as our guide. Very imformative, knowledgable and fun! We go to experience a part of The Great Wall that was unrestored and see all its natural beauty. Got a long history lesson along the way!

After the hike, we all went to lunch at a small place at the bottom of the hill. Located in a house, we ate lunch in the proprietors bedroom! What a hoot! Rogin is the Best of the Best! This tour company delivered for us and we are extremely grateful.

Beijing Palace Carpet Weaving Skills

Beijing palace carpet weaving skills (北京宫毯织造技艺), as one part of Beijing culture, is a kind of traditional handicraft of Beijing with unique regional and royal characteristic. Palace carpet arose in Ming and Qing Dynasties in the way of state-ownership.

In early Republic of China, Beijing has become one of the main producing areas of Chinese carpet. During 70s to 80s, carpet export reached its peak, enjoying a good international reputation. In 2008, it was selected into the second batch of national intangible cultural heritage.

The handmade palace carpet has a long history in Beijing. There were special workshops for palace carpet in Beijing in Yuan Dynasty. During the period of Emperor of Xianfeng in Qing Dynasty, handmade carpet manufacture moved towards folk as a large number of Tibet carpet craftsmen went to Beijing, when handmade carpet was more flourish.

Beijing palace carpet features with soft surface and fast splices with wool and silk thread as raw materials. Beijing palace carpet is various in categories including rug, wall carpet, fitted carpet, etc.. The patterns of Beijing palace carpet are rich and colorful such as Beijing-style, antique style, ethnic style, brocade style, bird and flower-style, and so on.

All of the patterns pay attention to symmetry, making a sense of well-organized. Beijing palace carpet weaving procedure is divided into three steps: prepare, shaping and embellish. Beijing palace carpet displays substantially Chinese traditional culture as well as the royal artistic characteristics of Beijing. It embodies not only the royal dignity, but also the folk flavor.
