We had an absolutely perfect day with our tour guide - Rogin Luo - who took us for a hike along The Great Wall! Didn't know what to expect and were thrilled to have him as our guide. Very imformative, knowledgable and fun! We go to experience a part of The Great Wall that was unrestored and see all its natural beauty. Got a long history lesson along the way!

After the hike, we all went to lunch at a small place at the bottom of the hill. Located in a house, we ate lunch in the proprietors bedroom! What a hoot! Rogin is the Best of the Best! This tour company delivered for us and we are extremely grateful.

Beijing Glassware

As the traditional handicraft of Beijing, glassware (料器) is made of glass strip, exploited from Zibo, Shandong province. After melting, Glass strip is shaped into various forms such as vegetables, fruits, animals, etc.. The history of Beijing glassware could be traced back to Yuan Dynasty, made a development in Qing Dynasty. Snuff bottles made in the period of Emperor Qianlong (1736-1795) was the most prestigious.

As a kind of ancient Beijing culture,  Beijing glassware originated from Boshan county, Shandong Province. Primarily, most of Beijing glassware were small decorations such as eardrop, pin, string beads, button, and so on. According to the record in Ming Dynasty, glassware was appeared in Lantern Festival in Beijing at that time. During the year of Emperor Kangxi (1662-1722), a royal factory was established to especially produce glassware for royals. The technology at that time is more subtle, such as the vivid masterpiece of the twelve Chinese Zodiac.


















Inheritance
Beijing glassware achieved a period of great prosperity in Ming and Qing Dynasties. It is recorded that in the 20th year of Emperor Guangxu (in 1840), Beijing artist Zhang Kun and his disciple, Jia Fulai export jewelry made with materials from Shandong and Japan.
Zhao Jiugao

Zhao Jiugao, a folk artist, built up a workshop named Si Yi Gong Hao to in Huashi to produce materials of glassware specially. At the same time, another Beijing artist, Jiang Wenliang, opened another workshop of glassware in Huashi. After decades of development, the technology of glassware created into four schools such as Jiang school, Wang school, Zhao school and Yue school.

Jiang school is famous for meticulous workmanship; Wang school is good at producing animals; Zhao school is skilled in making petals of glassware and Yue school is set in production and marketing professional.


















Chen Dehai
Chen Dehai is the only artist granted as the “arts and crafts mater”, who learned artistic skill from Jiang school at the age of 12. He showed his talent when he was 20 years old. After the establishment of Beijing Glassware Factory, he worked in the factory together with Hu Ruicheng and Tian Wenyuan.

Hu Ruicheng
Hu Ruicheng is well-known for the picture of eight horses. Small chicken initiated by Hu Ruicheng is popular for the vivid and cute image.

Tian Wenyuan
Tian Wenyuan, a brilliant student of Jiang school, is expert in variety of birds and beasts. His student Xing Lianxiang is the only person mastering design and production of this technology at present. Graduating from Beijing Institute of Arts and Crafts in 1976, Xing Lanxiang worked in engineering department, Beijing Glassware Factory. She is skilled in absorbing figures from folk story.
