We had an absolutely perfect day with our tour guide - Rogin Luo - who took us for a hike along The Great Wall! Didn't know what to expect and were thrilled to have him as our guide. Very imformative, knowledgable and fun! We go to experience a part of The Great Wall that was unrestored and see all its natural beauty. Got a long history lesson along the way!

After the hike, we all went to lunch at a small place at the bottom of the hill. Located in a house, we ate lunch in the proprietors bedroom! What a hoot! Rogin is the Best of the Best! This tour company delivered for us and we are extremely grateful.

Daoxiangcun Pastry Store

Established in 1895 in Guanyin Temple in Qianmenwai Street, Daoxiangcun (稻香村) is the first store engaged in sweet pastry. It was forced to close in 1926 and reopened in 1984. Until now, there are over 30 direct-sale stores, more than 100 franchise stores, one food distribution center, a center factory of 140,000 square meters and a processing of raw materials base. It mainly deals in Chinese and Western cakes, prepared food, frozen food and leisure food. It is the symbol of Beijing culture.

Development of Daoxiangcun
Daoxiangcun originally was built up in the 21st year of Emperor Guangxu (in 1895). It was popular by people from all walks of life, among which, Lu Xun was one of regular customers. According to the historical record, Emperor Qianlong praised highly about pastry of Daoxiangcun after he made a taste and granted the name of “Daoxiangcun”.

Due to the flourishing business, in 1911, Wang Rongqing and Zhu Youqing, pupils of Daoxiangcun broke away the group and set up another pastry store as like as Daoxiangcun opposite to Daoxiangcun pastry store, named Guixiangcun. In 1916, another pupil of Daoxiangcun, named Zhang Senlong set up another Daoxiangcun in Dongan Market. Thus, in Beijing there is a mutually competitive situation among these pastry stores.


1926, Daoxiangcun was forced to close because of the messy current situation. After the reform and opening-up, Liu Zhenying, the 5th successor of Daoxiangcun, prepared positively to recover Daoxiangcun. He asked back the former old technician and older workers and invested RMB 80,000 to built up the factory of Daoxiangcun in Dongzhimen. On 22nd, January, 1984, the first Daoxiangcun pastry store was formally opened in North Street of Dongsi.
The traditional Daoxiangcun mooncake is filled with various ingredients such as nuts, jujube paste, sweetened bean paste, egg and so on. With the development of the society, mooncake of Daoxiangcun keeps pace with times. It adds up modern tastes such as lotus paste, green tea, purple sweet potato, cheese, and so on.
