Yangtze River Cruise Daily Schedule – Victoria Cruises

Monday, June 6th, 2011
October 17-20, 2010, I had Yangtze River Cruises from Chongqing to Yichang on Victoria Jenna, one of the 8 Victoria Cruises. This was my third cruise on Yangtze River Tour after my two previous cruises in 1989 and 2005. Last year’s cruise has given me very deep impression in terms of cruise service and luxury conditions on the ship.

I’d like to do a brief trip report on my Yangtze River Cruises in 2010. Hopefuly my report will be useful for those who are going to make a life-long cruise along Yangtze River, especially on Victoria ships. Much of my report is based on the daily schedule leaflet sent to my room by the deck attendent.

Brief introduction to the cruise staff Victoria Jenna as below:

                             Captain: Li Long Hai

6:00 PM This was the official boaring time. The first evening dinner was not included. You may grab a bit in the city of Chongqing after your Chongqing Tour before boarding. If you don’t mind the high prices of the food on the ship, you can have easy dinner on the deck 2 of Victoria Jenna.

Getting to the pier, I paid a porter rmb 10 to carry my suitcase to the ship simply because it was still a long walk to the boat. First I had to descend dozens of steps to the bank of the river, then crossed rickety platforms suspended over the water to my boat.

Boaring Victoria Jenna

After check-in, passengers were welcomed to the Yangtze Club on Deck 5 and met the staff and tested their skills. We tried one of the evening specials:”Victoria Vista” and “Slow Boat to China” – 28RMB a glass!

We were also told to gather here on the deck 5 the next morning to have the briefing on the staff, ship and services.

10:15 PM We were informed to watch on our in-house movie channel #8″To Live”
Victoria Jenna was scheduled to depart Chongqing the next morning around 05:30am

Returning to my own room, we found the daily schedule leaflet the desk. The first day’s leaflet was focused on the rules and regulations relative to “passenger health and safety”, ”Strict smoking policy”, “Chit payment method”,  ”in case of fire or evacuation”…

As a light smoker, I was happy to learn that smokers still had some social status on the ship – smoking allowed on the outer decks. I asked the cabin attedent for an ashtray. If your roommate dislikes smoking, you still have way out by smoking in the smoking room on the deck 5. I was lucky to travel alone in an executive roon - Room 519 on the 5th deck. The room was elegantly furnished according to a 5-star luxury hotel with a spacious balcony as well as a huge window because it was located in the corner of the stern.

When is the Best Time to Cruise on Yangtze River?

Thursday, February 10th, 2011

Entering Qutang Gorge - the Three Gorges

Yangtze River is the largest and longest river in China. It flows for 6,300 kilometres from the glaciers on the Tibetan Plateau in Qinghai eastward across southwest, central and eastern China before emptying into the East China Sea at Shanghai. A cruise on Yangtze River is a must for many foreign visitor to China.

One of the frequently asked questions likely to tantalize you is “When is the best time to Cruise on Yangtze River?” Any time it is okay to travel when ships are sailing. The best seasons should be spring and autumn. More specifically, April to June, and September to November. Correspondingly, there is no discount among these months. If you cruise in summer or winter, you can enjoy the preferential price and the cruise prices the lower than peak seasons.

Three Gorges & Dam Cruise is the highlight of the lifetime Yangtze River Cruise. Chongqing to Yichang route is by far the most travelled section of the Yangtze.

Weather in major cities along the Yangtze River:

Chongqing
Chongqing is known as one of the “three furnaces” in China, together with Wuhan and Nanjing. It is also a foggy city. The annual average temperature here is 18℃ with lows of 6 to 8℃ in winter and highs of 27 to 29℃ in summer. Spring and winter are the best seasons to visit here.

Yichang
Yichang enjoys four clear seasons with cloudy and sunny springs, hot and humid summers, fine and pleasant autumns and dry winters. It is very hot and humid during summer, damp and freezing cold in winter. The best time to visit Yichang is therefore during spring and autumn.

Wuhan
Wuhan is one of China’s “furnace cities”, which means it gets really hot in summer. The best months to travel are April, May, September and October when temperatures are much more manageable and there is less rainfall than at other times of the year.

Nanjing
Nanjing has a humid subtropical climate The four seasons are distinct in Nanjing, with hot summers and cold winters. The spring is warm and humid, and the rainy season falls on June and July.

Shanghai
The weather in Shanghai is overall mild and moist all year round, with spring and autumn being the best time for traveling.

Wu Gorge – The Three Gorges, Yangtze River

Wednesday, October 20th, 2010

At 4;50pm Oct 19, 2010, we are approaching Wu Gorge (巫峡), one of the Three Gorges between Qutang Gorge and Xiling Gorge. Wu Gorge is the most famous and beautiful gorge of the three, with a total length of over 40 km starting from the mouth of the Daning River( the Little Three Gorges ) of the riverside town of Wushan to the Guandukou Town of Batong( Guandukou is 17km west of the riverside town of Badong County ). Its cliffs tower over 900 meters, topped by the sharp, jagged peaks on the either bank. A total of 12 peaks are perched on the either side, including Goddess Peak and Peak of the Immortals.

This time I don’t go to the observation deck on the 6th floor. Instead, I walk to the bow on the fifth deck with less ship facilities to bar our eyesight.

Enjoying the mountains topped by the sharp, jagged peaks on the either bank

Many pasengers are gathering at the bow on the 6th deck viewing the magnificent Gorge,

Sitting and appreciating the gorge

There are totally twelve peaks standing along both sides of Wu Gorge. Among them, Goddess Peak is the most well known for its beauty.

Catch a glimpse of the Peak - Goddess Peak

Then again, I come to the stern to take the photos of the Wu Gorge under the backdrop of the dusk.

Wu Gorge viewed through the window of my room is not bad. I can easily enjoy Wu Gorge while sitting in my room.
