Tianjin Beitang Ancient Town

Plan Tianjin tour? Tianjin is a concrete book on modern history of China. The city of Tianjin has over 400 European style buildings or villas, which are lagacies of the concessions formerly owned by Britain, France, America, Itlay, Japan, Russia and more between 1860 and 1945. So most of the old foreign villas in Tianjin have gone through over 50 years. Tianjin is a place where westerners feel as if they are back home.

Now with the completion of the Beitang Ancient Town (officially known as “Bestown”) in the north of Binhai New District of Tianjin, Tianjin has added an interesting sight that brings you back to an ancient town gradually formed from 1403 in the early Ming Dynasty (1368 – 1644). Beitang Town was an important military defence border town in Ming and Qing dynasties. Beitang Town produced the Beitang seafood that mainly supplied for the imperial courts in Beijing.

The new Beitang Ancient Town reproduces the prime time when Beitang Town served as the acropolis of the ancient Beijing city. The ancient tow has an area of 500,000 square meters and a construction area of 300,000 square meters. You will see the ancient city, inclduing temples, gardens, ancient streets and cannons. Over 60 stores have their outlets in the newly constructed ancient town, including Tianjin time-honored shops, traditional Tianjin food, colorful performances and many more activities.

The new Beitang Ancient Town was open to the public on May 01, 2012. It is located by Beitang Avenue, Beitang Economic Development Zone, Binhai New Area, Tianjin. Free admission. You may take Bus 520 from Tanggu to Beitang. Contact phone number: 022 65669199.

  1. Hello Willemien,

First take the light rail from the station of Zhongshan Men (中山门) in the city of Tianjin and you get off at the station of Tanggu (塘沽). From Tanggu, You change for Bus 103 and get off at the final stop of Beitang (北塘). Then you walk about 4 km and you will get to the newly restored Beitang Ancient Town.(北塘古镇).
