Are you looking for free stuff during your Shanghai Tour? Well, Most of the musuems in Shanghai are free of charge. Shanghai is home to many world-class museums and art galleries. There are over one hundred to choose from, ranging from the historical to the hi-tech. I’ve rounded up a list of my top 10 Shanghai museums for your reference.

No.1: Shanghai Museum 上海博物馆
The scope, depth and quality of its collections, and the striking architecture and use of modern technology make the Shanghai Museum one of the most famous if not the most famous in China. It covers an area of 38,000 square meters, with a scale that surpasses the old museum severalfold. The exterior of the museum utilizes the shape of an ancient bronze ding, specifically a Chen ding, with its rather archaic flavor.

No.2: Shanghai Natural History Museum 上海自然博物馆
Shanghai Natural History Museum is a museum dedicated to natural history. It is one of the largest museums of natural sciences in China. Unlike most of Shanghai’s museums, which are glossy and modern, this museum, like its contents, has seemingly been frozen in time, which perversely makes it a rather delightful visit. There is the usual collection of animals, mummies and fossils.

No.3: Shanghai History Museum 上海历史博物馆

Shanghai History Museum is located at No. 1286, Hongqiao Road, Shanghai.  The museum adopts the display with “real objects in the scenes” supplemented with high-tech methods, combining cultural relics, stage properties, models, sound and light into one. Shanghai Science & Technology Museum is a large museum in Pudong, Shanghai, close to Century Park, the largest park of the city. The museum covers an area of 68,000 square meters, a floor space of 98,000 square meters and an exhibition space of 65,500 square meters with planned visiting flow of 2,000,000 to 3,000,000 visitors per year. Shanghai Science & Technology Museum will arrange temporary exhibitions during a whole year.

No.5: Shanghai Natural Wild-Insect Kingdom 上海大自然野生昆虫馆
Shanghai Natural Wild-Insect Kingdom, located between the Riverside Promenade and the Oriental Pearl TV Tower, is the first of its kind in China. The birds and the bees, the beetles and the butterflies, all your usual creepy crawlies are on display in this kingdom housing several galleries, including a tropical rainforest and a reptile cave.

No.6: Shanghai Arts and Crafts Museum 上海工艺美术博物馆

In the main building of the museum is the exhibition hall for folk arts, carvings and embroideries, composing 10 specialized workshops staffed with 50 professional artisans. The exhibits and collections in the museum and research institute are the masterpieces of modern and contemporary arts and crafts. No.7: Shanghai Museum of TCM 上海中医药博物馆

Shanghai TCM Museum, the museum of the profound TCM and TCM culture, was opened in the new campus of Shanghai TCM University in Zhangjiang Hi-Tech Park,  Pudong New Area in October 2004. The museum consists of three parts: the Medical History Museum of Shanghai TCM University/ Chinese Medical Association, the Specimen Room of Chinese Herbal Medicine and the History Museum of School.Address: 1200 Cailun Rd. No.8: Navy Shanghai Museum  上海海军博物馆
The Navy Museum in Shanghai is located in Haibin Residence Community, the eastern part of Lujing, BaoShan District, covering an area of 11,000 square meters with its building area of 5000 meters. The museum originally was Changjiang Warship Memorial Hall, and further extended into an half-round modern building in late time. The Shanghai Museum of Navy consists of 4 exhibition halls.

No.9: Shanghai Postal Museum 上海邮政博物馆
If you are interested in postal history and precious stamps, you can have a visit to the Shanghai Postal Museum at 250 North Suzhou Road. You will get closer to the past, present and future of the city’s postal service there. With a space of 8000 square meters, there is the duplicated horse-drawn carriage used in 1909, the truck model used in 1917. All these relics reappear the postal development and changes.

No.10: Shanghai Entomological Museum 上海昆虫博物馆
Insects are probably the most successful life form on the planet. The Shanghai Entomological Museum is located within the Shanghai Institutes for Biological Sciences in Xuhui District. Shanghai Entomological Museum has collected more than one million insect specimens. Among the collections, there are a great number of animals on the brink of extinction and the insect specimens of quarantine.

  1. We went to the navy museum Shanghai on Friday 5th of April 2013, they don’t allow foreigners in, wasted our time good mood and taxi money 🙁

  3. The Natural History Museum is wonderful but not free. I paid a 5 RMB entrance fee which was the best value for money.

  4. there’re lots of nice museum in Sh! I’d also include wine and spirits museum to the list. its advantage that is free of charge for sure, plus free wine tasting; though previous reservation is required which is easy to make.
