 At the sea level of over 1600 meters and on the loess plateau, the city of Lanzhou is located in a narrow valley extending from east to west for about 20km and bound by the mountains in the north and south. The Yellow River cuts through the city from west to east in the valley.

The long city is spread along the southern bank of the Yellow River. The city center is composed of two districts – Chengguan District in the east and Qilihe District in the west. Chengguan District is the center of the central city of Lanzhou. You are advised to stay in Chengguan District, which is riddled with brilliant shopping streets, cheap or luxury hotels, local cuisine or western restaurants.

Lanzhou Airport is situated approx.70km north of Lanzhou City. Lanzhou Railway Station is nestled below the Gaolan Mountain in the south of Chengguan District. The major Lanzhou Long-distance bus station is located just to the southwest of Lanzhou Railway Station.

Tianshui Road is the main avenue from north to south with its southern tip being Lanzhou Railway Station and northern tip the Yellow River. On the Tianshui Road, you will find Lanzhou University, Lanzhou Hotel, Lanzhou Legend Hotel and Provincial Museum.

On the southern bank of the Yellow River, a 20km long river front park has been built. Plenty of bridges have been constructed to span the Yellow River. Among the bridges, Zhongshan Bridge is the oldest one being built in the Qing Dynasty.
