Plan your Inner Mongolia tour? Wulanbutong, or the Ulan Buh in Mongolian literally means “Red-colored Altar-shaped Hills”. Wulanbutong Grassland, also known as the Ulan Buh Grassland is located on the south of the Hunshandake Sandland ( part of the Hexigten Global Geopark) in the southern tip of Hexigten Banner in Chifeng of Inner Mongolia. Across the provincial border river, to the south of the Ulan Buh Grassland is the Saihanba National Forest Park.

Historically, both Wulanbutong Grassland and the Saihanba National Forest Park used to be the royal hunting ranch ( known as Weichang, or Mulan Paddock ) of the Qing Emperors. Wulanbutong Grassland is well-known to the world because it was the famous battle field where Qing Emperor Kangxi commanded a successful battle against Galdan Boshugtu Khan here.

Galdan Boshugtu Khan, ruler of the Dzungar Khanate, attacked the ancient Khalka Mongolia. The Khalka, unable to launch an effective defence, turned to the Qing Dynasty for help. The Qing Emperor Kangxi personally led his army and made a decisive victory on the Wulanbutong area.

The highlight of the Wulanbutong Grassland is the Hongshan Army Horse Farm. The military horse ranch is situated 110km in the south of Kishiketen Qi, 105km to the north of Weichang County, 230 to the northeast of Chengde and 500km to the northeast of Beijing.

The Hongshan Army Horse Farm was first built in August, 1964, an army horse supply base for the army horses used in the border areas. In the past 40 years, the horse farm has sent over 15,000 trained horses to the military. The Hongshan Army Horse Farm is perched on the high lands (Bashang) between the remaining hills of the Greater Xing’an Range and the Yinshan Mountains. These high lands in Mongolia is called “Saihanba” meaning “beautiful high lands”. The Hongshan Army Horse Farm belongs to the typical hill grassland with an altitude of 1,500 meters.

Besides being well known for the massive prairie, the Wulanbutong Grassland has also been known as the warehouse of flowers throughout centuries as there are more than 300 kinds of flowers or herbs with extremely high medicinal value to be found here including the golden-needle flower and canary creeper.

The Wulan Butong Grassland is one of the most ideal destinations for summer vacation. Besides enjoying the scenic beauty and warm hospitality of the Mongolians, visitors can enjoy the beauty of the stretch of grasslands as well as riding horses freely on the grassland. In addition, there are more activities like camel riding, shooting, archery and campfire parties also available here.

How to get there?

1. First take the morning train from Beijing to Chengde. Then hire a van or join the local day trips to the Hongshan Army Horse Farm or the Saihanba National Forest Park .

2. First tak the overnight trains from Beijing to Chifeng. Then take the local bus to the Hongshan Army Horse Farm or the Saihanba National Forest Park .

Hi I am from Singapore. few years ago I was dissapointed to go to white oobo grassland on the west from city of hohhot around mid oct and heavy first snow that spoiled my trip as the hotels all closed after the golden week. This time I want to go again . Ulan buh grassland is different from Ulan bluir grassland near the mongolia east .

I plan to travel to saihanba forest and I thought it will good ideas to add Ulan buh as well. My first interest is to take horses running together that it must be hired to get the photo taken? can it be arranged as I heard at saihanba forest they have it.

2nd is to stay at tent and hope to take night stars photography.

Also i need your recommendation to get a private transport car to the grassland. Or any public transport to there first and get a local driver drive me around at grassland.

Maybe you can suggest better planning base on my requests.

    thanks you

    Dear graeme chow,

As far as I know, it is a bit daunting to use public transport to get to Saihanba and Ulanbutong. You’d better arrange your own transport to get there by hiring a car or van. If you can share a vehicle with other travelers, it would be much better.

Last year I went to Ulanbutong with a photography tour group. Check out the link below for more information:
