Plan your Inner Mongolia tour? Wulanbutong, or the Ulan Buh in Mongolian literally means ”Red-colored Altar-shaped Hills”. Wulanbutong Grassland, also known as the Ulan Buh Grassland is located on the south of the Hunshandake Sandland ( part of the Hexigten Global Geopark) in the southern tip of Hexigten Banner in Chifeng of Inner Mongolia. Across the provincial border river, to the south of the Ulan Buh Grassland is the Saihanba National Forest Park.

Historically, both Wulanbutong Grassland and the Saihanba National Forest Park used to be the royal hunting ranch ( known as Weichang, or Mulan Paddock ) of the Qing Emperors. Wulanbutong Grassland is well-known to the world because it was the famous battle field where Qing Emperor Kangxi commanded a successful battle against Galdan Boshugtu Khan here. Galdan Boshugtu Khan, ruler of the Dzungar Khanate, attacked the ancient Khalka Mongolia. The Khalka, unable to launch an effective defence, turned to the Qing Dynasty for help. The Qing Emperor Kangxi personally led his army and made a decisive victory on the Wulanbutong area.

The highlight of the Wulanbutong Grassland is the Hongshan Army Horse Farm. The military horse ranch is situated 110km in the south of Kishiketen Qi, 105km to the north of Weichang County, 230 to the northeast of Chengde and 500km to the northeast of Beijing.

The Hongshan Army Horse Farm was first built in August, 1964, a army horse supply base for the army horses used in the border areas. In the past 40 years, the horse farm has sent over 15,000 trained horses to the military. The Hongshan Army Horse Farm is perched on the high lands (Bashang) between the remaining hills of the Greater Xing’an Range and the Yinshan Mountains. These high lands in Mongolia is called “Saihanba” meaning “beautiful high lands”. The Hongshan Army Horse Farm belongs to the typical hill grassland with an altitude of 1,500 meters.

Besides being well known for the massive prairie, the Wulanbutong Grassland has also been known as the warehouse of flowers throughout centuries as there are more than 300 kinds of flowers or herbs with extremely high medicinal value to be found here including the golden-needle flower and canary creeper.

The Wulan Butong Grassland is one of the most ideal destinations for summer vacation. Besides enjoying the scenic beauty and warm hospitality of the Mongolians, visitors can enjoy the beauty of the stretch of grasslands as well as riding horses freely on the grassland. In addition, there are more activities like camel riding, shooting, archery and campfire parties also available here.

How to get there?

Planning your Inner Mongolia Tour? Xi Wuzhumuqin Grassland is the best preserved pasture in the Xilingol Grassland. It is located in Xi Wuzhumuqin Qi ( West Wuzhumuqin Banner ) in the east of Xilin Gol League of Inner Mongolia. Xi Wuzhumuqin Qi is also called Xi Ujimqin Qi or West Ujimqin Banner.

“Wuzhumuqin” in Mongolian literally means “grape pickers”, the tribal people who lived in the present border area (Alay Mountains) between the northern Xinjiang and Mongolia in the 13th century. They moved here in the 17th century and in 1641 the tribe head recovered the name of Wuzhumuqin”. The present name of Xi (West) Wuzhumuqin Qi was formed in 1954 in contrast to the other Qi known as Dong (East) Wuzhumuqin Qi which is now also under the jurisdiction of Xilingol League.

The Wuzhumuqin Grassland is typical of the temperate grassland in China. The grassland boasts of of marshlands, meadow grassland, sand dunes, and wetlands, which is well known as the grassland mecca and the most beautiful grassland in the northern China. The local herders are very skillful at raising and training the Wuzhumuqin horses. Wuzhumuqin horses have a long and glorious history. The legend goes that Genghis Khan’s famous Guard regiment used the Wuzhumuqin horses galloping along the west expedition.

To preserve the most beautiful part of the Xilingol Grassland, in Xi Wuzhumuqin Qi there is a large well preserved pasture of the West Wuzhumuqin Grassland known as West Wuzhumuqin Nomadic Tribe. Also in the central part of Xilingol Grassland, the Nomadic Tribe Area is very large, said to be the size of over 100 Tian’anmen Squares in Beijing. In the nomadic tribe, you have the chance to feel the nomadic culture and the pristine grassland views – the meadow grass, the desert-steppe and the forest, a transition belt from the meadow grass to the forest.

In the West Wuzhumuqin Nomadic Tribe, Genghis Khan Cultural Plaza is constructed to accommodate travelers who would stay overnight on the grassland. It is a reproduction of a splendid and luxury palace of ancient Mongolian style. Travelers can feel and touch the 13th mythical palace life of the ancient Mongolian people. The cultural plaza has over 100 yurts including 60 deluxe yurts, holding 350 people each night. Its huge dining hall can accommodate 1000 people at the same time. It organizes a small-scale Naadam Performance of horse racing, wrestling during the day and a exciting bonfire party under the stary sky in the evening during the tourist season.

Best Time to Visit: June – September

If you are going to visit Hailar on your Northeast Inner Mongolia Tour, you are highly recommended to visit the World Anti-fascist War Hailar Memorial Park, a war theme park set on the former Hailar Fortress built by the Japanese Forces of Aggression during the Second World War. The Hailar Fortress was one of the 17 fortresses ever built by the Japanese invaders in the Northeast China from 1931 to 1945.

The Hailar Fortress was constructed as a springboard aimted at attacking the former Soviet Union and eventually fought hand in hand with the Germany fascist army to control the whole world. Tens of thousand Chinese labourers were taken from the hinterland and forced to build the fortress. All the laborers were killed after the completion of the fortress on the pretext of keeping the military secret.

The Hailar Fortress is perched on the open area 3km in the north of Hailar District of Hulunbuir City. The fortress is surrounded by the Aobao Mountain and the Beishan Mountain on its three sides. The fortress is composed of two connected parts – the ground part and underground part. The underground works was about 12 – 17 meters below the ground works. The Hailar Fortress takes an area of 22 square kilometers with 5 major posions and 4 auxiliary positions.

On August 8, 1945, The former Soviet Union declared the war againt Japan. With the support of Northeast Anti-Japanese United Army and the Mongolian People’s Army, the 1.58 million Soviet Red Army made fatal attacks on the Japanese soldiers stationed in the Northeast China. On August 18, all the 3000 Japanese soldiers walked out of the positions in the Hailar Fortress and surrounded.

Most of the facilities and the fortress have been well preserved with their original appearance to a remarkable degree. The World Anti-fascist War Hailar Memorial Park is the largest war theme park of such kind in China. By making use of the original fortress, the park planner has incorporated many relevant war documents, pictures and objects to vividly depict the Japanese military aggression and Chinese bravery in fighting against the Japnese invation.

The entrance to the park is flanked by two crumbling gun turrets ( the ticketing office) on the left side and a base on the right engraved in Chinese, Russian and Mongolian with the name of the park and a real formerly Soviet T35 tank on it.

Plan your Northeast Inner Mongolia tour? Located in the northeast of Inner Mongolia, Manzhouli is the largest border crossing between China and Russia. Manzhouli is a sub-prefecture-level city under the jurisdiction of Hulunbuir City in Inner Mongolia.

Manzhouli City is named after the same name railway station of the Dongqing Railway which was constructed between 1901 and 1903 by the Russian Tsar. The Dongqing Railway started from Manzhouli and ended at Dalian passing by Harbin. The Manzhouli was the first station within China of the former Dongqing Railway and later became the name of the city that has developed from the border trade and business.

Manzhouli has the mixed folk custom of the three countries including China, Russia and Mongolia, a blend of Chinese and Western cultures. The City is teeming with unique buildings of Russian, European, Mongolian and Chinese styles

Now the layout of Manzhouli city center resembles a chessboard with all kinds of chess-like European-style buildings scattered along the streets. In 2007, all the 162 buildings lined on the 12 streets in the city center were renovated and upgraded, which has created the European style featuring the harmony between the outstanding single buildings and the uniqueness of each street.

The No.1 Street (一道街) features Russian style; the No.2 Street (二道街) Gothic style; No.3 Street (三道街) French Classic style; the No.4 and 5 Streets (s四道街和五道街) Italian Renaissance style. Manzhouli is a delicate and exquisite city with elegant streets where you walk shoulder to shoulder with Russians and full of the ancient Greek and Roman buildings.

All the signboards of the street-front-stores are in Chinese; Russian or Mongolian. Walking on the streets in Manzhouli, you have the feeling of being in an exotic city in a foreign country.

Manzhouli does gives us a pleasant surprise in an era when China is bogged down in the situation where more and more Chinese cities look the same.

Plan your Inner Mongolia tour? The city of Ergun is worth your time exploring since Ergun City was the cradle of Genghis Khan (1162-1227) and the formation and development of his Mongols, who here united all the tribes and started to conquer most of Asia and Eastern Europe.

Ergun City (Erguna, or Eerguna 额尔古纳) is named after the same name river – Ergun River, a border river between China and Russia. “Ergun” literally means ”giving” or “offering”, a kind of devotion that indicates the Ergun River is the cradle and mother river that has raised and nurtured the people on both banks of the Ergun River.

With its seat at Labudalin Subdistrict, Erguna City is located 130km to the north of Hailar (Hulunbuir City), on the northwest side of the Greater Xing’an Mountains, in the north of the Hulunbuir Grassland and on the right bank of Erguna River in Inner Mongolia. The whole city of Ergun occupies an area of 28,000 square kilometers with 67% forest, grassland 17% and arable land 6%. The Ergun City is inhabited by the multi-ethnic people with 22 minorities including Mongolians, Hui, Manchu, Korean, Daoer, Russian, Bai, Li, Xibe, Uyghur,Zhuang, Ewenki, Elunchun etc.

Ergun City has a 670km-long Sino-Russian borderline which takes 70% of the total bordrline between China and Russia. Along the borderline, there are two international border crossings – Shiwei and Heishantou, The two national-level ports between China and Russia have greatly developed the local economy and trade.

Ergun City develops and promotes its booming tourism mainly in three themes – The History of Mongolian Development, Russian Cultures and Ergun Eco-tours. Walk for 3 kilometers to the west direction and get to the top of the West Hill (720m) and have a bird-eye’s view of the city landscape of Eerguna and the famous Erguna Wetland (Genhe Wetland), the largest wetland in Asia. Genhe Wetland is scattered around the forest and the grassland with many types including marshes, shrub swamps, swamp forest, open bogs and moss. Erguna Wetland is on the plain delta formed by Erguna River and other three alpine rivers including Genhe River, Deerbugan River and Hawuer River.

The two well-known scenic towns – Shiwei Township and Moerdaoga Township are under the jurisdiction of the Erguna City. Shiwei is home to one of the smallest ethnic minority groups in China – the China’s Russian Ethnic Minority. In April, 2001, the Russina Minority Township was established. There are around 2000 Russian descendants, or Russian-Chinese more exactly still living in this village. Moerdaoga Township sits inside the even larger Moerdaoga National Forest Park. The Moerdaoga National Forest Park is the first forest park in the Greater Hinggan Mountains ever approved by the National Forestry Bureau.

How to get to the Ergun City?

When we tallk about ”Erguna City”, very often we refer to the Labudalin Subdistrict of Erguna City where the Erguna government is located. There are several daily long-distance busese running between Hailar and Ergun City (Labudalin Subdistrict).
