How to get to Deshengmen Bus Terminal

Several buses can bring you to the Deshengmen Bus Station. But the bus system in Beijing could be daunting even for the local Beijingers. It is advisable to take the Subway Line 2 to reach Deshengmen Bus Station. The the closest subway station to Deshengmen Bus Station is Jishuitan (积水潭) of the loop-type Subway Line 2.

You get off at the station of Jishuitan (积水潭), exit from the Exit A. Then walk along the sideway in the east direction for about 450 meters, soon you will see a high tower – the Deshengmen Arrow Tower. Deshengmen Bus Terminal is just below the northern and southern sides of the tower. The compound of Deshengmen Arrow Tower is within a roundabout.

So you have to cross a road to reach the bus station. Be careful crossing the road since the road has no traffic light at the time of my writing. By the way, on your 450-meter walk from the subway station of Jishuitan to the Deshengmen Arrow Tower, you will pass alongside the Deshengmenxi Bus Station (different from Deshengmen Bus Station) and you just ignore it!

You will be also distracted by some privately owned buses or mini-buses operated in the name of official Badaling-bound buses. We strongly suggest you take the official buses within the Deshengmen Bus Station for safety and reasonable price. Don’t be surprised if you find the queue in front of the bus 877 or 919 express could be very long, especially on the weekends or national public holidays.

Most passengers prefer to hike the northern slope of Badaling Great Wall simple because the north part is more scenic and convenient with cable car and slide services in between.

But still some people like to hike the southern slope to avoid the crowds for better photo opportunities. If you hike the southern slope, you have to backtrack.

Frequently Asked Questions

The most important fact is that the northern section of Badaling Great Wall is a loop route ( No.01 to No.12 Towers ) and you don’t have to backtrack. You can walk from Tower No.1 ( the main entrance )  up to the highest Tower No.08,then walk down to Tower 12 ( near the Bear Garden).

1) If a slow walker or wheel-chair users, what can we do?
The cable car goes up to somewhere below Tower No. 08 and No. 09. When you take cable car up, basically you will see large crowds of people on the Wall.

From the cable car station on the upper slope, you can either hike to Tower 8 or Tower 9. It is relatively easier to hike up to Tower 9 while it is a bit harder to walk up to Tower 8. To hike up to Tower 8, you have to climb over a steep slope known as “Haohanpo” ( a real hero”slope” ), or 好汉坡 in Chinese. Or you may just skip over it.

But in your case, so we recommend you walk slowly from Tower 01 up to somewhere on the northern section of the Wall to your comfort and back instead of taking a cable car.

Badaling is more wheelchair-friendly than Mutianyu Great Wall. On the Badaling Great Wall, there is a special flat lane is built for wheelchair users starting from Tower 1 to Tower 3 of the Wall. The accessible path is flat and not deep. So you can walk slowly along the accessible path to the Tower 3 and walk further for a better view if you can.

2)The Bus 877 is close the Badaling Pass, the entrance to Badaling Great Wall, the only main entrance. A 20-minute walk from Bus 877 to the main entrance.

3) The northern slope of the Badaling Great Wall is about 3700m long starting from North Tower No.1 up to the Northern Tower No.8, then down to Northern Tower No.12. The whole hiking takes 2-3 hours. Not everyone has the strong legs to hike all the 12 towers, so many passengers would take cable car up to the Wall (below Tower No.8 and Tower 9 ) to save their energy.

If you are in good shape, I suggest you hike all the 12 towers to digest the magnificent Badaling Great Wall on its northern slope instead of eating Instant food” by taking the cable car.

4) The cable car brings you up to the slope below both North Tower No.8 and Tower No.9. So from the cable car station on the upper slope, you can either hike to the Tower 8 or Tower 9. It is easier to hike up to the Tower 9 while it is a bit hard to walk up to the Tower 8. To hike up to the Tower 8, you have to climb over  a steep slope known as “Haohanpo” ( a real hero”slope ), or 好汉坡 in Chinese. Or you may just skip over it.

5) If you want to visit the Northern section of Badaling Great Wall, you can take the cable car up, then walk down: walk from Tower 8 to down to Tower 1, or from Tower 8 down to Tower 12. Or you can take a cable down. Also you can walk up to Tower 8, then take cable car down. One way cable car: RMB60; round trip cable car: RMB80.

6)  For the northern part of Badaling Great Wall, you can walk to the east from Tower 8 to down to Tower 12, then pass by the Bear Garden, then walk about 10 minutes back to the main entrance to the Tower 1, a loop route and you don’t have to backtrack.

  3. Hello,

This is so helpful, thank you! Just one question, could you show us on google maps exactly where the Deshengmen Arrow Tower is located.

    Thanks

  4. Hello Ron, I’m sorry that Google doesn’t work well here. It is very easy to find the tower.

  5. Hello Ron,

    Deshengmen – Badaling: 06:00-12:00 (every 10 or 20 minute ) Last bus at 12:00
    Badaling – Deshengmen: 10:30-17:00 (every 10 or 20 minute ) Last Bus at 17:00

  6. How far from Capital airport to Deshengmen Bus station and what will be the total cost of trip including returns trip.
Is it correct that there will be a bus that leaves bus station every 10-20 min if so that is very impressive.

  7. Hello Noelan,

Just take the airport express train from Beijing airport to its final stop at Dongzhimen (东直门), then interchange for Subway line 2, and get off at the station of Jishuitan (积水潭), exit from the Exit A. Then walk along the sideway in the east direction for about 450 meters, soon you will see a high tower – the Deshengmen Arrow Tower. Deshengmen Bus Station is just below the northern side of the tower. The compound of Deshengmen Arrow Tower is within a roundabout. So you have to cross a road to reach the bus station. Don’t be surprised if you find the queue in front of the bus 877 could be very long, especially on the weekends or national public holidays.

The return tickets for Bus 877 is RMB 24, plus airport express train RMB 25 and subway fee RMB2, adding up to RMB51.

  8. This was incredibly helpful! Thank you so much for writing it. My friends and I visited the Great Wall yesterday and everything was just as you wrote it would be.

  9. tq and very informative. will be reaching beijing airport late at 1.30 am wth fmly of 6 including parents in late nov. cheapest mode of transport at tht hour to downtown pls. appreciate, tks

  10. Hello Dave,

At that hour, no airport shuttle bus, no airport express train. You have to take a taxi to reach your hotel. For 6 persons, you should take 2 taxis. Suggest you hire a van through local travel agents or a car rental company in advance.

  11. tq daniel. another question, my aged parents will be wth me and they do not want to visit the min g tombs and souvener stops if i take the tour. will travelling by bus 877 be a big problem for senior citizens. tq

  12. Hello there!
Thank you a lot for perfect description. Nevertheless I am still missing one information – for trip back to Deshengmen – where the bus stop can be found in Badaling? Or is it the same one? Thank you for great work you do!

  13. Hello Daniel,

Thanks for a detailed and accurate description. It is very useful for the tourist to have valuable information. Today I went to Great Wall at Badaling just following this information without any hassle. I started early and got a 877 bus by 7am. There was big queue (Enthusiastic crowd!) but there were two buses back to back so I didn’t take more than 5 mins to fill up.

    Thanks,
    Rahul

  14. Hello Rahul,

Glad that you’ve made it! Taking a public bus in Beijing is daunting. It is preferable to use public transportation to mix with the locals for having true experience of Beijing and China as a whole.

  15. Hello,

Thanks for this information, I just have a few simple questions.

    1. Is “Badaling pass” the main entrance from the 877 bus?
    2. How many towers can be reached if I walk north from Badaling pass?
    3. How many hours would you recommend for someone to walk this far (consider fit, young male)
    4. Am I expected to walk back after reaching the end at the North or is there a cable car/toboggan down?

If I can go down at the very north:
    5. How does one return back to Beijing (Deshengmen) if you come down at the very north end.

    Kind regards,

    Nelson.

  16. Hello Nelson,

    1. Yes, the Bus 877 is close the Badaling Pass, the entrance to Badaling Great Wall, the only main entrance. A 15-minute walk from Bus 877 to the main entrance.

    2. The northern slope of the Badaling Great Wall is about 3700m long starting from NorthTower No.1 up to the Northern Tower No.8, then down to Northern Tower No.12. The whole hiking takes 2-3 hours. Not everyone has the strong legs to hike all the 12 towers, so many passengers would take cable car up to the Wall (below Tower No.8 and Tower9 ) to save their energy. If you are in good shape, I suggest you hike all the 12 towers to digest the magnificent Badaling Great Wall on its northern slope instead of eating “Instant food” by taking the cable car.

    3. The cable car brings you up to the slope below both North Tower No.8 and Tower No.9. So from the cable car station on the upper slope, you can eithe hike to the Tower 8 or Tower 9. It is easier to hike up to the Tower 9 while it is a bit hard to walk up to the Tower 8. To hike up to the Tower 8, you have to climb over a steep slope known as “Haohanpo” ( a real hero”slope ), or 好汉坡 in Chinese.

    4. If you want to visit the Northern section of Badaling Great Wall, you can take the cable car up, then walk down: walk from Tower 8 to down to Tower 1, or from Tower 8 down to Tower 12. Or you can take a cable down. Also you can walk up to Tower 8, then take cable car down. One way cable car: RMB60; round trip cable car: RMB80.

    5. For the northern part of Badaling Great Wall, you can walk to the east from Tower 8 to down to Tower 12, then pass by the Bear Garden, then walk about 10 minutes back to the main entrance to the Tower 1, a loop route and you don’t have to backtrack.

    6. if you come down at the very north end, you may take the cable car down and take bus 877 back to Beijing.

I do not intend to get a private driver.

  18. Hi Alvin,

It’s a bit tricky to use the public system to go from Badaling Great Wall to Badaling Ski Resort though they are only about 7 km apart. You may try to find a local taxi, costing you about 30 yuan. But personally I’ve never had any experience using the local taxis. Have good luck!

  19. Hi ! I will be going to Badaling dayafter.

Is there any information in this post that is out-dated or can I still follow it fully ?

Yes,you may use the local taxi and bargain for a deal.

    Have a good time!

  26. Hi,
thank you for the information, it is really very useful. I would like to have one more question. The tickets for bus 877 used to be booked directly in the bus or is there any ticket machine in the station?
thank you so much for info

  27. Dear Maryna,

Basically you need to line up, get on the bus and pay cash on the spot. If you have a transportation card, you just swipe and go.

For your convenience, you can buy a transportationb card in advance.

  28. Hi and thanks for one of the most informative blogs out there. I was wondering how to get a transportation card. What does it cost? And what it can be used for? Does it include taxis? Thank you.

  29. Hi and thanks for one of the most informative blogs out there! I have a question about the transportation card. What is it called? Where to buy it? How much does it cost? Where to recharge it? And where can it be used for? Taxi? Subway? Is it only valid in Beijing or also Xian? Thank you!

  30. Dear Ramses,

If you stay in Beijing for quite a few days, or want to have more transport convenience when you traveling Beijing by bus, you are highly recommended to buy a Beijing bus IC card, a kind of transportation smart card. A bus IC Card can be also used to pay for Beijing taxi, Beijing subway and S trains to Badaling Great Wall. The official name of the IC card is called “Yikatong”, which means “one card pass” in Chinese, similar to Hong Kong’s Octopus card, Singapore’s EZ-Link, or the Oyster Card used by TfL in London in United Kingdom.

More Information on the use of “Yiktong”

    1. Par value RMB100.00 including RMB20.00 deposit
    2. When you leave Beijing or don’t want to use the card anymore, you can return it to places which are appointed by Beijing Municipal Administration and Communications Card Co. Ltd. Then they will refund you RMB20.00 if your card is not damaged.
    3. You could refill the bus IC card from over 700 places – the ticket counters at Beijing subway stations, railway stations, most post offices, big supermarkets and so on.
    4. Yikatong Service phone number: 88087733 http://www.bjsuperpass.com (Chinese)

Each city has its own transportation card system. Unfortunately they haven’t been interconnected yet. Maybe in the near future.

  31. Hi guys,

Myself and my girlfriend are traveling to Beijing in July. We are staying in the city centre. What is the most recommended way to the great wall? I see that there is the Balding great wall and the Mutianyu great wall. Which is closer and more convenient to get to?

    Many thanks,

    Paddy

  32. Dear Paddy Molloy,

    1. Badaling is a bit convenient to go by public transport (S Train or Public Bus )
    See the link: http://www.tour-beijing.com/blog/beijing-travel/how-to-visit-great-wall-by-train

    2. Mutianyu is less crowded, but there is no direct bus line going from the downtown.
    See the link: http://www.tour-beijing.com/blog/beijing-travel/how-to-get-to-mutianyu-great-wall-by-bus

Alternatively, pay a little more to book a group tour to visit Mutianyu Great Wall ( no shopping stops ).

Have a nice time in Beijing!

  33. Hi Daniel,

Last year I have 12 hrs layover on a Saturday in Beijing and used the S2 train to go to Badaling with a friend. The line was long and you might not even be able to get on the train even you went there half hour ahead.

This Saturday I will have the same 12 hrs layover again with my family (Total 4). I am wondering other than bus and train, can I use the local subway to go to a station closer to Badaling and then call a taxi. Is there any official Taxi or private Taxi I could call from any subway station close to Badaling? I am Cantonese that could speak simple Mandarin. I am afraid I can’t get any taxi from place I am not familiar.

What is the cheapest way if I decide to call a taxi from the Beijing airport to Badaling directly? Should I go from the metered Taxi, margain a fixed price with the metered Taxi or risk to bargain with a private taxi. If the price is right, I don’t mind hiring them for the return trip if they can waiting for 3 to 4 hours. Can you tell me how that works and your recommendation?

    Thanks,
    Alan

  34. Dear Alan,

The subway lines in Beijing are not extended to Badaling ( still far away )

If you have 4 people in your travelling party, I suggest you share a taxi or book a private van from a local travel agency. I’m not sure about the taxi fare from Beijing airport to Badaling and back.

For the car rental with driver in Beijing, please check out the prices below:

    https://www.tour-beijing.com/car_rental/

Any questions, please email us at [email protected] .

    Have a nice layover!

  35. Hey Daniel,

When I search the route from Beijing to Ba Da Ling Great Wall in Baidu Maps it only suggests Bus 919 and 883. Is the bus number still 887 or has it changed to 883? Also do you have much information on the 20rmb tourist bus that runs from Qianmen to Ba Da Ling?

  36. Dear Admin,

Very usefull information. I am staying three days in beijing and want to viait the badaling area.

I want to take the bus no.1 from qianman but what time the first bus departs?
