Communities and sub-districts in Beijing

The city of Beijing has four levels of administraton division, namely the local city government, districts, subdistricts and communities. Under Beijing Government we have 14 districts; under each district we have several subdistricts; under subdistricts, we have residential communities or neighbourhoods in Beijing. Beijing also has two counties under its administration.
Subdistricts are the smallest political divisions in Beijing and other urban areas in China as well. Communities are non-government organisations aimed at developing the local residential communities or neighbourhoods in terms of health care, entertainment, employment, networking and more.
In Beijing the function of a district overlops that of a subdistrict in many aspects. So it is said that subdistricts will disappear and be replaced by communities. So in future districts will contact directly with commuinitied without subdistricts in between, thus thining the administration levels in Beijing.
